What Is an Import Export License in South Africa?
The term “import export license” is commonly used by business owners looking for permission to import or export goods commercially.
In South Africa, however, the process can involve different registrations and permits depending on what you are trading, where the goods are coming from or going to, and whether the products are subject to specific controls.
For many businesses, the key requirement is registration with the South African Revenue Service (SARS) as an importer and/or exporter.
SARS states that a person may not generally import goods into or export goods from South Africa without being registered as an importer or exporter. SARS manages these registrations through its Registration, Licensing and Accreditation (RLA) system.
Certain products may also be subject to additional controls administered by the International Trade Administration Commission of South Africa (ITAC). ITAC indicates that not all products are subject to import or export control, but certain categories—including used goods, waste and scrap—can be controlled.
This means that getting your business ready for international trade is not simply about obtaining a single generic “license”.
It is about making sure your business has the correct registrations and permits for its specific import or export activities.
